Our ship reaches Ketchikan while we sleep, a whole day to explore the best things in Ketchikan. By the time we wake up, we are already docked. After getting ready, we head to the top deck. The view is stunning and makes us even more excited for the day. Then, we make our way to The Windjammer for breakfast.
Eating while overlooking Ketchikan makes breakfast even better. The fresh air and beautiful scenery create the perfect start to our day.
As soon as we step off the ship, we see “The Rock,” a statue by Dave Rubin. It features seven life-sized figures who helped shape Alaska’s First City. Among them are a fisherman, miner, logger, bush pilot, frontierswoman, and Native drummer. Chief Johnson, a historic Tlingit leader, stands proudly at the top.
Walking through town, we feel the excitement of exploring our first Alaskan stop. Everything here looks and feels different from anywhere we have been. The best things in Ketchikan include history, culture, and breathtaking views.
We walk toward Creek Street, stopping often to admire and photograph towering totem poles. The wooden boardwalk, built on stilts above the creek, looks like something from the past. Today, it is home to shops and galleries, but it was once a well-known “Red Light” district.
As we stroll along, movement in the water below catches our attention. Seals dart through the creek, chasing salmon at incredible speeds. Watching them hunt in real life is fascinating. Their speed and agility make the experience unforgettable.
After spending time downtown, we take a bus to Totem Bight State Historical Park. As soon as we arrive, we are surrounded by lush rainforest and towering totem poles. Everywhere we look, something amazing catches our eye.
One of the highlights is the Clan House, a replica of a nineteenth-century Native community home. It is large enough to house multiple families and their chieftain. Seeing this historic structure up close makes us appreciate the deep cultural roots of this place.
Back in town, my parents return to the ship, but Dawn, Benson, and I go for lunch. We stop at Alaska Fish House, known for its fresh seafood. We order salmon and other local dishes to share. Everything tastes incredible, with fresh and rich flavors.
From stunning scenery to delicious food, our first day in Alaska is unforgettable. The best things in Ketchikan include history, wildlife, and amazing seafood. This adventure is just beginning, and we can’t wait to see what comes next!
