One of the Most Haunted Places in the

State of Illinois

Old Joliet Prison in Joliet, Illinois, is one of the most haunted places in Illinois, which was a driving factor in my decision to visit.

I first became familiar with the location while watching one of the paranormal shows on the Travel Channel. I am often entertained by the various paranormal shows on the channel, but it’s the darker and disturbing histories of the locations that I find the most intriguing.

As soon as I stepped foot on the property, I was struck by the size and intimidation of the prison. Unfortunately, many of the buildings were in horrible conditions and were unsafe to enter. My wife Dawn and I were only able to explore a few of the buildings due to safety concerns. However, the one building that we found the most interesting was death row. It was in the best condition of all the buildings and had a dark and eerie vibe to it.

Brief History of the Location

Joliet Prison in Illinois is known as one of the most haunted places in Illinois. This prison was in operation from 1858 to 2002 and was home to some of the most notorious criminals in Illinois history. Many people believe that the spirits of the prisoners and guards who died at the prison still haunt the site.

The prison was built to hold up to 1,200 inmates and was known for its strict disciplinary measures. Many prisoners were subjected to harsh conditions, including solitary confinement and hard labor. It’s no surprise that many of them died while serving their sentences.

One of the most haunted places in Illinois, the prison’s main cell block is said to be the most active area for paranormal activity. Visitors have reported seeing ghostly figures wandering the halls and have even heard the sounds of prisoners crying and shouting. Some have even claimed to have been pushed or touched by unseen hands.

One of the most notable ghosts at Joliet Prison is that of “Old Jim,” a prisoner who died in the prison’s infirmary. He is said to be a friendly ghost who is often seen smiling and waving at visitors. Another ghostly presence is said to be that of a guard named “Officer Brown,” who died while on duty. Visitors have reported seeing him walk the halls and even hearing his footsteps echoing through the prison.

The prison also has a death row, where many prisoners were executed. Visitors have reported feeling a sense of dread and unease in this area of the prison. Some have even claimed to have seen ghostly figures hanging from the gallows.
