World’s Largest Hand-Painted Czech Egg

This quiet Kansas town holds one of the most striking roadside attractions in the state. A towering, hand-painted Czech egg rises above Wilson in a way you do not expect, but you remember it long after you leave.

Your Experience

The World’s Largest Hand-Painted Czech Egg is one of my favorite roadside stops in Kansas. Going out of my way to see the massive Czech egg has happened more than once, and each visit feels worth the detour. My first stop came during a summer road trip to Colorado in July 2020, followed by a return visit in March 2023 while driving toward Arizona.

Seeing the egg in different seasons changes the experience. The colors feel brighter against summer skies and more dramatic during early spring. No matter the time of year, spotting the giant Czech Egg as you approach Wilson always feels surprising.

You can park nearby, walk around the egg, and take photos without feeling rushed. The stop is simple and relaxed. About ten minutes is all you need, though it is easy to linger longer.

Why It Exists

The World’s Largest Hand-Painted Czech Egg exists as a tribute to Wilson’s Czech heritage and the tradition of kraslice, decorative hand-painted eggs. Taking something small and detailed and scaling it up this much highlights the skill behind the patterns.

The egg stands 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide. Local artist Christine Slechta designed the patterns using traditional Czech colors and motifs. If you have seen Czech eggs before, the style feels familiar right away.

The Odd Stuff

The egg is made of fiberglass and arrived in Wilson in 2012. Volunteers spent years sanding and preparing the surface before painting began. A custom metal gazebo with matching Czech designs was later built around the egg and installed in 2016.
