Historic Bullock Hotel in Deadwood
Some places stay with you long after you leave. The Bullock Hotel in Deadwood is one of them. Known as one of the most haunted hotels in South Dakota, it was the first haunted or historic hotel I had ever stayed in. After watching an episode of Ghost Adventures that featured the Bullock, I added it to my list of must-visit destinations.
When some vacation time opened up, I planned a trip to South Dakota and booked two nights at the Bullock Hotel. I invited my dad to join me since he had never stayed anywhere with a haunted reputation before. Neither of us knew quite what to expect, but the idea of spending the night in one of the most haunted hotels in South Dakota was too intriguing to pass up.
Even now, the Bullock Hotel still comes up whenever we talk about haunted places. The experience surpassed our expectations and influenced how I plan trips to this day.
A Brief History of Deadwood and the Black Hills
The story of Deadwood began long before the Bullock Hotel was ever built. After the United States’ defeat in Red Cloud’s War, the land west of the Missouri River became part of the Great Sioux Reservation, home to the Sioux tribes.
Then came 1873, a year of financial panic that spread across the world. Banks over-invested in railroad expansion, and when the railroads faltered, so did the banks. A year later, Colonel George Custer led an expedition to the Black Hills in search of a new fort location. His men did not just find suitable land; they found gold.
News of gold spread quickly, and fortune seekers poured into the Black Hills. Some struck it rich, others lost everything, and many never left. Their stories, and perhaps their spirits, remain.
The Bullock Hotel Experience
Standing in the heart of historic Deadwood, the Bullock Hotel is the town’s oldest hotel and one of the most haunted hotels in South Dakota. Built by Seth Bullock, the town’s first sheriff, the hotel has seen over a century of history, expansion, and renovation. Paranormal enthusiasts often say that construction work tends to stir up ghostly activity, and the Bullock seems to support that theory.
Guests and employees have reported hearing disembodied voices, seeing orbs drift through the hallways, and catching glimpses of shadowy figures that vanish when approached. Some even claim to have seen Seth Bullock himself, still watching over the hotel he once owned.
During our stay, I did not see Bullock’s ghost, but there was a presence, an undeniable energy that filled the corridors. It felt as if the past lingered just beyond sight, brushing by in the quiet of the night.
If you are looking for one of the most haunted hotels in South Dakota, the Bullock Hotel belongs on your list. For those brave enough, request Room 211, the very room where Seth Bullock passed away.
Inside the Bullock
Today, the Bullock Hotel combines historic charm with modern comfort. The first floor includes a casino, dining area, and check-in desk that still hints at the hotel’s 19th-century origins. Upstairs are 26 guest rooms and two suites, each with its own character and echoes of the past.
Whether you visit for the history, the architecture, or the paranormal, the Bullock Hotel offers a glimpse into Deadwood’s wilder days. It is a place where stories refuse to fade and where every creak of the floorboards might just be someone, or something, saying hello.
