Mount Rushmore National Memorial

I have visited Mount Rushmore several times

Brief History

Located in the western part of the state of South Dakota in the beautiful Black Hills you will find Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

Carved into the rock face, are the faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. These four presidents represent the birth, growth, development, and preservation of the United States.

The origins of Mount Rushmore began in 1923 and didn’t even include the presidents of the United States. The original concept was to carve the “Needles” rock formations in the likeness of western historical figures.

Though Gutzon Borglum was enthusiastic about the project but had reservations that western historical figures would gain and sustain national interest that would draw people to the area. The first two figures he proposed were George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

In 1925, the Mount Harney bill was signed, which allowed for the carving of a monument to take place in Custer State Park.
